Kevin Strootman Man Utd transfer news - Roma aware of rumours linking midfielder with Red Devils

Roma officials have admitted they are aware of transfer rumours linking Holland midfielder Kevin Strootman with a move to Manchester United in the upcoming January window. The Italian club insist they have no plans to sell the powerful 24-year-old but speculation persists that the Red Devils are ready to swoop with a tempting offer. Having dropped out of the Champions League and into the Europa League due to their 2-0 loss to Manchester City, Roma may find it hard to fend off any serious bids, even if they are adamant Strootman is going nowhere. "This is something that I keep reading every day and this is something that our president doesn't like to keep reading every day," said Roma general manager Mauro Baldissoni. "He made it clear that in a statement a few weeks ago that Kevin is not for sale. But, to be fair, we haven't received any call from Manchester, so we're not planning to sell Kevin." When asked if he thought there would be an imminent enquiry from Old Trafford, Baldissoni refused to be drawn on that question. He added on Sky Sports News: "To be honest, I haven't got a clue. This is something you have to ask Mr Van Gaal or Mr Woodward. We don't think we will sell our best players. Kevin is not only young, but he is a great player and we have a long contract on him, so we definitely want to build our team around him." United chief executive Ed Woodward has stated United will only make a major signing in January if one of their top summer targets became available early, which could still be the case following Roma's European setback. Louis van Gaal insists bringing in a new defender is not his main concern, despite continued injury problems in that department, which suggests another powerful midfielder is more of a priority. Strootman was an unused understitute against City as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury which kept him out of the World Cup, but he was a regular member of Van Gaal's Netherlands team during the qualifying campaign for that tournament.

UEFA Champions League draw - Date, time, venue and permutations for round of last 16

Three English teams have qualified for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, with Premier League leaders Chelsea progressing as group winners and Arsenal and Manchester City in the runners-up pot for Monday's draw, which will be held in Nyon at 11.00 GMT (12.00 CET). Clubs cannot play sides they have already met at the pool stage, or another team from their own domestic competition, leading to the following permutations: CHELSEA Could face: Juventus, Basel, Bayer Leverkusen, Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk The Blues, who lifted this trophy in 2012 and reached the semi-finals last season, were the top scorers during the group stage with 17 goals. Jose Mourinho said: "I don't think any of the big teams are out of the Champions League now - except maybe Liverpool. There are a few sharks in the ocean." ARSENAL Could face: Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Monaco, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Porto The Gunners have made it this far for 15 straight seasons but will be looking to avoid a fifth consecutive loss in the first knockout round. Aaron Ramsey said: "We have done well and we nearly came top of the group. We finished off in style and hopefully now we will get a nice draw. On our day, we are capable of giving anyone a game, but hopefully the draw is a bit more kinder to us this time." MANCHESTER CITY Could face: Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Porto City recovered from picking up just two points in their first four matches to beat Bayern Munich and then Roma, prevailing in Italy without Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany James Milner joked: "We like getting the same teams and we like getting tough draws, so no doubt we'll get Barcelona again. But we think we can go through whoever we get."

Motherwell FC next manager - Mitchell van der Gaag favourite following Terry Butcher blow

Mitchell van der Gaag has been backed to become the next Motherwell manager after Terry Butcher ruled himself out of the running to replace Stuart McCall. Butcher had been widely regarded as the favourite to fill the vacancy and secure a sensational return to Fir Park, where he was previously in charge from 2002 to 2006. However, the 55-year-old former England defender has explained his reasons for stepping aside to Motherwell officials after reportedly being one of six candidates interviewed by the Steelmen. Van der Gaag represented the club as a player from 1995 to 1997, with the centre-half scoring seven goals in 28 games in his second season to help Well narrowly avoid relegation from the Scottish Premier League. As a manager, the 43-year-old took Maritimo into the Europa League and also had a decent spell in charge of Portuguese outfit Belenenses, leading them to promotion from the second division, before taking a break to overcome heart problems. Also among the front-runners for what is now a fairly wide-open market is Ian Baraclough, who has managed Scunthorpe United and Sligo Rovers, where he beat off opposition from ex-Aston Villa boss Brian Little, club legend Willie McStay and Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane to land that post. Well-travelled former Kilmarnock and Greenock Morton coach Kenny Shiels is another leading candidate, while caretaker manager Kenny Black and ex-player Rob Maaskant, another Dutchman, have been interviewed too. Motherwell, currently third from bottom of the Scottish Premiership table, just two points ahead of the basement dwellers after losing 1-0 at home to Celtic on Saturday, are tipped to make an appointment this week.

River Plate vs Atletico Nacional Copa Sudamericana live stream about to start

River Plate go into the second leg of the 2014 Copa Sudamericana final as favourites to lift the trophy after securing a 1-1 draw at Atletico Nacional in the first encounter, with tonight's return fixture in Argentina having a kick-off time of 00.15 GMT. Their Colombian opponents have already shown they can tough it out under pressure when beating Sao Paulo on penalties in the semis, so get set for a tight clash if you are watching this game via live online streaming. Watch River Plate v Atletico Nacional here: In the opening tussle at Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellin, Orlando Berrio Melendez put Atletico ahead before Leonardo Pisculichi levelled for River Plate to give them a clear advantage back on home turf. Marcelo Gallardo's side have been stuttering along recently, winning just two of their last eight matches in all competitions, but they have been in formidable form on their own turf in this tournament. After beating Libertad of Paraguay 2-0 here in the last 16, River Plate edged out compatriots Estudiantes 3-2 in the quarter-finals and then Boca Juniors 1-0 in the semis, so the Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti faithful will be expecting that sequence to continue. Atletico have shown they can hold their own on the road, though, prevailing against Vitoria in Brazil and Universidad Cesar Vallejo in Peru before hanging on to only lose 1-0 at Sao Paulo and then win a shoot-out. However, with Uruguayan duo Carlos Sanchez and Rodrigo Mora adding some attacking flair to the rock-solid home-grown contingent, the feeling is that River Plate may just have too much strength in depth and can give Argentina a seventh triumph in 13 renewals of this competition. Prediction: River Plate 1 Atletico Nacional 0

Arsenal FC transfer news - Schneiderlin and Van Dijk on radar for January window

With the Champions League group stage now out of the way, Arsene Wenger will turn his thoughts to strengthening in the January transfer window, with Morgan Schneiderlin and Virgil van Dijk believed to be among his top targets. The Gunners cannot afford to rest on their laurels after crushing Galatasaray 4-1 in Turkey to progress in second place behind Borussia Dortmund as there is still work to be done in the Premier League. Last weekend's 3-2 loss at Stoke left Arsenal in sixth place and highlighted the two areas where Wenger needs to seek out reinforcements, with the Potters again exposing a lack of strength in midfield and defensive frailties. Jack Wilshere's continuing injury problems could force the Frenchman's hand in looking to add more energy and work-rate in midfield, with Schneiderlin an obvious candidate to fill that void. Past targets Sami Khedira and Yohan Cabaye could also come into the reckoning, but the feeling is that the Real Madrid and PSG pair are now on the downgrade, whilst Southampton star Schneiderlin still has a big upside. The Saints have struggled without the 25-year-old Frenchman in recent weeks, highlighting how well he holds the team together - a trait Arsenal have lacked when under pressure in big games. Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny continue to be Arsenal's first-choice pairing at centre-half but the latter has begun to show the strain by picking up a few niggles and another defender is surely needed to share the load. Celtic star Van Dijk is another clear contender to come straight in and shore up this position, with the 23-year-old Dutchman having the 6ft 4in frame capable of handling Premier League forward lines. The fact that arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also reported to be on the trail of both players will give Arsenal even more incentive to swoop as the race hots up to qualify for next season's Champions League with a top-four finish.

FC Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain Champions League tips, kick-off time and team news

FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain will battle it out for the all-important top spot in Champions League Group F at the Nou Camp, with tonight's crucial clash having a kick-off time of 19.45 GMT. The stage is perfectly set as Barca have home advantage but they do need to win to progress as pool winners, which would almost certainly earn them an easier draw in the first knockout round. Luis Enrique's side are still without the injured Thomas Vermaelen, while Rafinha and Dani Alves sit out this game through suspension as the Catalan giants seek to avenge a 3-2 September loss in Paris. Sunday's 5-1 La Liga derby win over Espanyol at this venue made it seven straight victories for Barca, with the amazing Lionel Messi hitting a third hat-trick in his last four matches! "Our aim is clear – we want to win and PSG want the same," said Enrique. "They are one of the contenders to win the competition and it'll be a demanding match, but I would prefer to finish first in the group to gain a slight advantage in the next round." PSG were without talismanic forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic when prevailing in France, but this time their only injury concern is Jean Christophe Bahebeck, with manager Laurent Blanc admitting Barca will be formidable foes on home turf but still hoping to claim top spot. "We know the advantage finishing top brings," commented Blanc. "You avoid certain opponents and all these details count in the long run. I have told my players to be ambitious and aggressive, to put Barcelona in a tight spot. We won't be fielding 10 defenders." PSG are unbeaten in 23 matches in all competitions this term, winning 11 of their last 12 games, and drew here last season when only going out on the away goals rule, so let's take them to grind out another stalemate this evening. Prediction: Barcelona 1 PSG 1

Liverpool FC transfer news - Six Brendan Rodgers targets after Champions League KO by Basel

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hinted he will ask the Anfield board for a significant war chest in the January transfer window after the Reds crashed out of the Champions League when held to a 1-1 draw by Basel. Rodgers was allowed to spend big in the summer following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, but few of his buys have yet to bear fruit, with the Merseyside outfit only ninth in the Premier League table. The likes of Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno, Javi Manquillo and especially Mario Balotelli have taken time to settle in or just proved downright disappointing. Whether Liverpool's owners are prepared to bankroll another major recruitment drive as they also seek to expand Anfield's capacity with a costly redevelopment remains to be seen, but we've taken a look at six of the best possible buys being linked with the Reds. NATHANIEL CLYNE Rodgers raided Southampton in the summer to sign Lallana, Lovren and Lambert but this was the one that got away. The pacy full-back has established himself as one of the hottest prospects in the Premier League, as well as earning England recognition, but Manchester United are also monitoring his situation. XHERDAN SHAQIRI The 23-year-old Switzerland winger appears to be just on the fringes at Bayern Munich so a cheeky offer could well tempt the German giants. Proved his worth with man of the match displays at the World Cup and has the creative spark to help solve Liverpool's problems up front. JACKSON MARTINEZ Powerful striker who has an above-average goalscoring record with Porto and Colombia. With the Portugal outfit going strong in the Champions League, pulling off this coup looks like wishful thinking, though. EVERTON RIBEIRO Hardly an overnight sensation at the age of 25, but this attacking midfielder has been linked with a number of top European clubs since being called into the post-World Cup Brazil squad by Dunga. Questions will be asked over whether he is the kind of ready-made finished article that Liverpool need, but Rodgers showed with Balotelli that he's prepared to gamble. YOHAN CABAYE Enjoyed an impressive stint with Newcastle United in the Premier League so this 28-year-old midfielder could almost certainly step in and do a job straight away. High-profile move to PSG hasn't quite worked out as planned and could welcome a return to England when recovering from injury. DAVID MARSHALL Dark horse to come in after establishing himself as a solid goalkeeper with Cardiff City, following earlier spells at Celtic and Norwich. Simon Mignolet isn't as bullet-proof as he was after some average displays this season.

Roma vs Manchester City Champions League tips, kick-off time and team news from Italy

Manchester City will be going for goals as they seek to avoid another embarrassing early exit from the Champions League by getting a positive result at Roma, with this fascinating Group E game having a kick-off time of 19.45. The big-spending Blues have failed to qualify for the knockout rounds in two of the last three seasons and need to either win or secure a score draw to advance this term, assuming CSKA Moscow don't win against Bayern Munich in Germany. After picking up just two points from their first five games, City had Sergio Aguero to thank for keeping their hopes alive as he hit a hat-trick in the thrilling 3-2 defeat of Bayern Munich at Etihad Stadium, but the Argentina striker will miss this game with a knee problem. Key midfielder Yaya Toure is also absent due to suspension, but Fernandinho returns from his ban, while captain Vincent Kompany, playmaker David Silva and forward Stevan Jovetic could all return from recent injuries. Manuel Pellegrini's side are seeking a sixth straight win in all competitions and the manager said: "It will be a very important evening. Reaching the round of 16 is very important for the club. "In this competition we have made many mistakes, especially in Moscow, but now we want to show what we can do. We have good players and if we can beat Bayern, we can beat anybody. We are an attacking team and we are not going to change anything now." Roma will progress if they win, or if this game ends in a goalless draw and CSKA don't beat Bayern, but head coach Rudi Garcia insists his side will seek to make certain by claiming victory. The Italians looked the better team in a 1-1 draw in Manchester when they last met and the manager said: "City are in good form, but we are at home and we are confident. We have to enjoy the game and do the best we can. It would be amazing if we won. We want to go through." Roma are again without Brazilian defender Leandro Castan but they caught the eye with some slick passing and movement at the Etihad in September and have struck nine times in their last three home matches, so Garcia's side to prevail is a percentage pick. Prediction: Roma 2 Manchester City 1

Manchester United transfer news - Strootman bid ready if Roma suffer Champions League KO

Manchester United fans may be cheering on Roma when they entertain neighbours City in the Champions League this week but there could be a silver lining should the Italian side bow out of Europe's elite club competition, with Red Devils transfer target Kevin Strootman becoming available. Chief executive Ed Woodward has spoken of how United will only spend big in the January window if one of their summer options entered the market and that may just happen if City succeed at the Olympic Stadium. Roma would still be well placed to challenge Juventus for the Serie A title, with Rudi Garcia's team currently in second place behind the domestic kingpins, three points off the summit. However, any loss in revenue from not making progress in the lucrative Champions League could force them to listen to offers for Holland midfielder Strootman, who was a regular in Louis van Gaal's Netherlands side during the World Cup qualifying campaign. The 24-year-old missed out on a trip to Brazil 2014 after suffering a knee injury in April but recently returned to full fitness, playing for the first 54 minutes of his club's frustrating 2-2 draw with Sassuolo on Saturday. That outing followed a couple of previous cameo roles and, although he was only taken off following the dismissal of Daniele De Rossi, United will still want to see more evidence that he is totally free of any lingering niggles before jumping in. Radamel Falcao's stop-start loan spell at Old Trafford has made United officials more wary of bringing in players with a recent history of injury problems, but so far the signs are encouraging that Strootman is on the mend. Van Gaal's need for another defensive midfielder is obvious, with Daley Blind currently sidelined and Michael Carrick having to help out in defence at Southampton after Chris Smalling limped off and Paddy McNair suffered from a poor performance. With Phil Jones also still in the treatment room, United continue to monitor other options in this department and Strootman is very much a front-runner when it comes to possible signings.

St Mirren FC next manager - Barry Smith backed to replace Tommy Craig

Alloa Athletic boss Barry Smith is the hot favourite to become the next permanent St Mirren manager following the dismissal of Tommy Craig after just 19 games in charge at Love Street. Craig succeeded Danny Lennon in May but has paid the price for a poor run of results which have left the Saints joint-bottom of the Scottish Premiership table. A 4-0 Scottish FA Cup replay defeat at Inverness and Saturday's 1-0 home loss to St Johnstone in the league stretched St Mirren's winless run to eight matches and proved the final straw for the board. Smith, who spent most of his playing career as a defender with Dundee, immediately attracted support to fill the vacancy, having also impressed at that club in his first managerial role. The 40-year-old guided the Dees to a club record unbeaten league streak of 23 games and First Division safety despite having suffered a 25-point deduction for going into administration. He also led Dundee into the Scottish Premier League in his second season there, but was undersequently dismissed when they struggled to cope with the step up to the top flight. However, Smith has done another solid job since taking charge of Alloa, leading the Wasps to the Scottish Challenge Cup final with a 3-2 defeat of Rangers in the semis, and would be a popular appointment. Veteran Saints striker Steven Thompson, experienced winger Gary Teale and former Scotland Under-21s boss Billy Stark are also attracting interest in this market, though, and more developments could follow in the next few days.
