Next Rangers FC manager - McCall early favourite to succeed under-fire McCoist

Stuart McCall has been installed as the early favourite to become the next permanent Rangers manager as speculation continues over the future of current Ibrox boss Ally McCoist. With the Glasgow giants nine points adrift of Hearts at the top of the Scottish Championship, the pressure is mounting on McCoist after some indifferent recent results. A run of eight straight wins in all competitions came to an end with a frustrating home draw against Alloa and that was followed by a 2-0 loss to the table toppers in Edinburgh. Rangers quickly stopped the rot with a 3-0 Scottish FA Cup success over Kilmarnock last Sunday but McCoist was back under fire following Wednesday's 3-2 defeat at Alloa in the League Challenge Cup. When asked about whether he will be seeking a vote of confidence from the board, McCoist replied: "We'll have discussions regarding moving forward, particularly in January, but I don't feel the need to seek reassurance. "Everybody has times in their jobs when it's been better - good times and not-so-good times. Wednesday was not such a good time, putting it mildly. "Things do go through your mind, I'd be lying if I said otherwise, but you do come back to earth and realise that you can't lose your focus. The focus is, and always has been, getting us back to the top flight. "Sunday was a high, Wednesday was a massive disappointment, but the focus hasn't changed and can't change. One of the problems we're having is the inconsistency - the result and the performance on Wednesday clearly wasn't good enough, I accept that totally. "It's our job to affect the team in such a way that we can be more consistent and we see more performances like Sunday, rather than the performance on Wednesday." With Mike Ashley having recently invested in the club, the desire to see instant results is stronger than ever and former Motherwell chief McCall could well be next in line if changes are afoot. Fellow former Ibrox heroes Brian Laudrup and Terry Butcher also feature among the front runners to replace McCall and this market may well see significant movement if Rangers drop any more points in the next few weeks.

PSG vs Nantes Ligue 1 live stream about to start

PSG are hot favourites to maintain their unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season in France by beating Nantes at the Parc des Princes, with Saturday's clash having a kick-off time of 16.00 GMT. Laurent Blanc's side were held to a 1-1 draw at Lille in midweek so will be determined not to drop any more points in the capital city this weekend, with fans able to monitor their progress via live online streaming. Watch PSG v Nantes live: In-form striker Edinson Cavani netted again for Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night but they will hope to have Zlatan Ibrahimovic back after a Salvatore Sirigu own goal cost them victory. The Sweden star was rested for that game, with Blanc keeping one eye on the upcoming Champions League tie with Barcelona, but is expected to return here. Marco Verratti is in line to start in place of Blaise Matuidi after recovering from a pelvic injury, but Yohan Cabaye is still sidelined with a calf problem. On the Lille stalemate, Blanc said: "We knew Lille would do everything to stop us from winning. We're disappointed, but at the same time there were good things and encouraging signs in this game." Nantes were on a run of 10 games without defeat themselves until going down 2-0 at Marseille last weekend and then slipping up again 2-1 at home to Toulouse on Tuesday, while Koffi Djidji (thigh) is out and Johan Audel (ankle) is a doubt. "We're paying for our little mistakes. We're still one of the best defences in the league. We're not going to change everything," said midfielder Jordan Veretout. "We mustn't let them play, otherwise we're going to make life difficult for ourselves. We have to get back to basics; defend well, be combative, fight as a team for every ball and attack well all together." However, PSG have won their last six league games at home to Nantes, including a 5-0 rout last term, and few will be opposing Ibrahimovic, Cavani and Co on this occasion. Prediction: PSG 3 Nantes 0

Motherwell vs Celtic Scottish Premiership live stream about to start

Celtic will look to extend their advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership table when visiting struggling Motherwell on Saturday, with this Fir Park clash having a kick-off time of 12.45 GMT. The Hoops made it six straight wins in this competition when edging out Partick 1-0 on Wednesday and supporters based outside the UK can see if they reach a magnificent seven by watching via live online streaming. Watch Motherwell v Celtic here: Ronny Deila had to endure a bit of a rocky start to his reign after replacing Neil Lennon in the summer but he has now settled in nicely and is keen to maintain the momentum built up in recent weeks. “It’s going to be the same type of game as the one against Partick Thistle," he commented on the club website. "We’re going to have the ball a lot, and it will be hard to break them down. “So we need movement, and movement together to open them up. We need tempo on the ball and also to be very good defensively so we can keep them under pressure and hopefully we’ll open them up and get the goals we need." Jason Denayer and Charlie Mulgrew are struggling to be fit for this game, while it may also come too soon for Mikael Lustig but Celtic are still firm favourites to improve on their 1-1 home draw with the Steelmen in September. The Glasgow giants had to rely on a 68th-minute Kris Commons penalty to rescue them that day after John Sutton had put Motherwell ahead. “The first half against Motherwell last time was poor, so that’s something we want to make amends for, the fact that we didn’t win the game," added Deila. “We go into every game aiming to win and we know that we can win every game in the league if we’re at our best." Managerless Motherwell have lost seven of their last eight matches and our money is going on Celtic to secure a smooth success, with John Guidetti grabbing the first goal. Prediction: Motherwell 0 Celtic 2

Premier League Fantasy Football transfer tips - How to sign Aguero for Gameweek 15

Sergio Aguero has been piling on the Fantasy Football points in recent games and if you haven't already got him in your side the temptation is there to mortgage the farm in order to fund a transfer swoop ahead of Manchester City's clash with Everton in Gameweek 15. At £12.9million, the Argentina ace is hardly cheap, though, so we're taking a look at some value buys to consider in potential two-player swap deals that will help you snap up super Sergio. CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN - Spurs £8million Predictably struggled to make much of an impression at Chelsea on Wednesday night but had previously fired in two goals and an assist for a combined total of 22 points against Hull City and Everton to take his tally for the season to a healthy 69. With Spurs facing Crystal Palace at home this weekend, followed by games against Swansea, Burnley and Leicester, Eriksen could be a shrewd downgrade from Alexis Sanchez or one of your Chelsea midfielders. STEWART DOWNING - West Ham £6.1million Sam Allardyce has utilised this talented ball-player in a different role this season and that has led to five assists, including one versus West Brom in midweek, and two goals, as well as some decent bonus points. The Hammers hosts Swansea this weekend in what should be an entertaining encounter, while Sunderland away and Leicester at home are other solid fixtures on the horizon for a team which continues to impress. CHARLIE AUSTIN - QPR £6.1million Looks an ideal candidate for a cheaper second/third striker after netting five times in his last six Premier League games, as QPR attempt to go in search of the victories needed to get them out of trouble. Media attention suggesting Austin is a future England prospect also enhances hopes of bonus points and Rangers will be keen to capitalise on a home clash with Burnley on Saturday, while West Brom and Crystal Palace also visit Loftus Road before the end of the year.

Chelsea FC transfer news - Gerard Pique backed to join Blues from FC Barcelona

Chelsea have emerged as favourites to snap up Gerard Pique in the January transfer window if Barcelona decide to part company with the Spain defender. The 27-year-old already has some experience of Premier League football, having spent four years with Manchester United from 2004 to 2008, before returning to boyhood club Barca. The last six seasons at Camp Nou have been a considerable success for the technically gifted centre-half, who has picked up four La Liga titles and two Champions League triumphs at club level. With World Cup and European Championship glory coming amongst his 65 international caps, his future looked secure when signing a new five-year contract in May. However, things have not gone smoothly this season under the new leadership of Luis Enrique, with the partnership of Jeremy Mathieu and Javier Mascherano sometimes preferred. Had former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen not been forced to sit out the first half of the campaign due to a hamstring injury, Pique's playing time would have been further reduced. Hampering thoughts of a possible move away from his beloved club is the fact that partner Shakira is heavily pregnant, with their second son due in a couple of months. However, footballers are generally a resilient bunch when it comes to sorting out career prospects and if Pique does fear being frozen out in the new year, he could still seize the chance to leave on his own terms. Chelsea have a formidable partnership at the heart of their defence in the form of Gary Cahill and John Terry, but the latter cannot go on forever and there is a lack of experience in behind the top two. French starlet Kurt Zouma filled in for Cahill when he picked up a head injury at the weekend and clearly has plenty of potential, but 20 is a young age to be playing centre-half in the Premier League.

Next Motherwell FC manager - Terry Butcher all the rage to get Fir Park job again

Terry Butcher is now a hot favourite to become the next Motherwell manager after being heavily backed to make a sensational return to the Scottish Premiership club. The 55-year-old was in charge at Fir Park from 2002 to 2006, having previously worked as an assistant to Eric Black for a year. Butcher was credited with giving the Steelmen a period of stability on the pitch, leading them to the 2005 Scottish League Cup final, despite having to cope with a difficult financial situation during much of his tenure. The former England defender left Scotland to take charge of Sydney FC, before returning from Australia to manage at Brentford, via a brief spell as assistant at Partick Thistle. George Burley later made Butcher his No 2 with the Scotland national team, prior to a successful stint in charge of Inverness, where he was nominated for PFA Scotland Manager of the Year. Butcher's most recent venture did not work out as well, with Hibs being relegated to the Scottish Championship following a play-off loss to Hamilton, which the coach described as his "darkest day in football". Despite that setback, Butcher appears keen to have another crack at redeeming his reputation north of the border as Motherwell close in on finding a successor to Stuart McCall. Caretaker boss Derek Adams enjoyed a honeymoon period in the hot-seat when edging out Dundee United, but has since suffered back-to-back defeats in the league and Scottish FA Cup. He is now drifting in the market on who will get the nod on a permanent basis, with Graeme Souness emerging as a shock alternative behind Butcher.

Sunderland v Man City Tips - Will Sunderland pull off a coup tonight?

Sunderland have plenty in their favour when they host Manchester City on Wednesday and could be capable of pulling off another big result against a top club. Various pointers suggest the Black Cats can avoid defeat in this game, although some pundits will fairly claim that City may have turned a corner following their victories within the last week or so against Bayern Munich and Southampton. Confidence looks to have returned to the English champions as a result of Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick in the Champions League and also the 3-0 win against one of only two teams that had been above them (although not anymore) in the domestic table. But the Stadium of Light is anything but a happy hunting ground for City, who incredibly have lost 1-0 on their last four visits there and you have to go back to August 2008 to find the last time they took three points at this venue. And it’s not only on Wearside where Sunderland have been a bogey team for the reigning Premier League kings. City’s only dropped points at the Etihad Stadium in their 2011-12 title-winning campaign came against Sunderland (3-3 draw), while they also trailed 1-0 at half time to Gus Poyet’s men in last season’s Capital One Cup Final before turning it around. Then there were shades of that March 2012 game again in April this year when Connor Wickham’s double gave Sunderland a 2-1 lead with just seven minutes to go, only for Samir Nasri to do what his team-mate Aleksandar Kolarov had done two years earlier by bagging a late equaliser. So there should be no shortage of confidence for Sunderland, and that will only have increased following their result at the weekend when they became only the third Premier League club this season to take points off Chelsea in a 0-0 draw. Definitely a side that plays better against the biggest opponents, it can only be good for Sunderland that they go straight into another huge test so soon after that achievement with the self-belief coursing through their collective veins. Of course it would be no surprise if City’s greater quality shone through and they won comfortably. However, this is not a ground where that tends to happen and so it’s worth backing Sunderland to ride their luck and extend their fine head-to-head record.

Metz vs Bordeaux Ligue 1 preview and kick-off time

Bordeaux will continue their quest to play in the Champions League next season when they take on Metz this evening.   The French Ligue reaches game week 16 this evening with Metz playing host to Bordeaux at the Stade Saint-Symphorien with a kick-off time of 1800 GMT. Metz are on home soil this Wednesday and they are currently in 13th position with a total of 18 points and have a goal difference of minus five. They have picked up a record of five wins, three draws and seven defeats and their recent form has been less than impressive as they have lost four of their last five league matches. During that run they have won just once and that was against Caen as they came out 3-2 winners at the start of November, but since then they have lost three on the bounce against Toulouse, PSG and Lens. Bordeaux, on the other hand, are pushing for Champions League football next season at the least as they look to continue their good start. They have 27 points already locked in the bank and are only seven points behind league leaders Olympique Marseille after winning eight of their opening 15 matches. Their recent form has seen them win three of their last five matches and they come into this game on the back of a 1-0 home victory over Lille with Cheick Diabate scoring the winner just after the hour mark. These two have not met in the top flight of French football since the 2007-08 season with Bordeaux coming out on top on both occasions. They ran out 1-0 winners on the road back in August 2007 before winning the return fixture 3-0 on home soil in February 2008.

Liverpool FC transfer news - Martin Odegaard backed to join Reds in January

Liverpool have been backed to make a move for teenage sensation Martin Odegaard in the January transfer window, as Europe's top clubs monitor the progress of the Norway wonder-kid. Odegaard holds the record for the youngest ever player to appear in his country's leading division after featuring for Stromgodset IF as a 15-year-old in April, before scoring his first goal the following month. With his 16th birthday not coming until December 17, the attacking midfielder has also already picked up three international caps, including featuring in the recent Euro 2016 qualifier against Bulgaria, coming on as a 64th-minute understitute in a 2-1 win. Gareth Bale made his Wales debut in the same competition aged 17 years and 83 days, while Romelu Lukaku was a month older when representing Belgium in the tournament for the first time. When returning to club football after that experience, Odegaard bagged both goals as Stromgodset beat Lillestrom 2-1 at home, further enhancing his reputation with media coverage across the Continent. Odegaard has travelled outside of Scandinavia for brief training stints with Bayern Munich and Manchester United, prompting speculation that he could still join one of those clubs. However, he is a lifelong Liverpool supporter and the prospect of switching to Anfield would be an even more appealing one if an offer does come in from the Reds. Former Blackburn star Morten Gamst Pedersen has described Odegaard as the most naturally talented player he has ever worked with, although he did add that his new international teammate ideally needs to mature a little more physically before making a major move. However, when it comes to swooping for precocious youngsters, he who hesitates is usually lost. [txt19444]

Crystal Palace FC transfer news - Kris Commons backed to join from Celtic FC

Crystal Palace are among the favourites to sign Celtic star Kris Commons in the January transfer window as Neil Warnock seeks to introduce more of an attacking threat into his Eagles side. Commons has scored five times in his last 13 matches for the Hoops, having fired in a whopping 31 strikes last season, including 27 in the Scottish Premiership to claim Golden Boot glory north of the border. At 31, it could be a case of now or never for the Nottingham-born marksman with regards returning to a top-level club in England, having represented Stoke, Forest and Derby in his younger days. Palace have netted just eight times from seven Premier League fixtures played at Selhurst Park this season and Warnock knows they need to address that problem to avoid dropping down to the Championship. The London club were more than a match for Aston Villa in general play on Tuesday but failed to convert their chances, while Christian Benteke struck the only goal of the game for the visitors. "We lacked a little bit of quality in the penalty box, if I'm honest," said Warnock. "We had a lot of efforts and played some great stuff, as well as doing a lot of pressing and could have had a penalty. "But you make your own luck in this game and I didn't think we did that. Just a little more urgency in the box is required - if we'd have had Benteke, I think we'd have won quite comfortably. "He held the ball up well, especially when they were under the cosh, and that's what we're looking for - a Benteke in January would be nice. At the moment, we've got to get on with what we've got, but it's not all doom and gloom." A loan move for Arsenal striker Joel Campbell could be another option, but Palace can ill-afford to hang around for too long waiting to see if the Gunners will let him go.
