Aston Villa vs Southampton expert tips - Redknapp backing Pelle to score in Saints win

Southampton will be looking to continue their superb start to the Premier League season with a win at struggling Aston Villa tonight and Jamie Redknapp believes the Saints can go marching on. Ronald Koeman's side have won eight of their last nine top-flight fixtures, including four straight victories over Sunderland, Stoke, Hull and Leicester without conceding a single goal. That great run has pushed Southampton up to second in the table, splitting Chelsea and Manchester City, while Villa are down in 17th, just one place and a single point above the relegation zone. Paul Lambert's side ended a run of six straight defeats when drawing 0-0 at West Ham before the international break, but have only scored once in those seven games. "Southampton have been the success story of the season so far," said Sky Bet ambassador Redknapp. "It's absolutely brilliant what they've done. I love the way they are playing and the energy they have. "They sold a lot of players in the summer and I think people thought they might be in the bottom four instead of the top four. Can they make the Champions League? I'm not sure, but it's been a brilliant start to the season. "They've got to maintain it. Last year they were in a similar position and just started to lose it towards the middle of the season, when things started to go wrong. "But they're doing a great job and are playing against a side that are lacking confidence. Aston Villa need some wins very quickly but their home form's been poor this last couple of years and I've got a feeling Southampton are going to win this one." Graziano Pelle has proven an inspirational summer signing, scoring nine times for Saints this term, as well as netting for Italy in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Malta after receiving his international debut at the age of 29. "Looking at the goalscorer market, Pelle's obviously the one that jumps out," added Redknapp. "He's got a lot of ability and scores goals, including some great overhead kicks and headers. "He's got great power, so I'm going to go for him to score first and Southampton to keep up that good form with a 2-1 win."

Liverpool FC news - Rodgers backed for Anfield exit after another Premier League loss

Brendan Rodgers has been backed to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post after Liverpool suffered a fourth straight loss when going down 3-1 at Crystal Palace. Rickie Lambert put the Reds ahead after just two minutes at Selhurst Park, but then conceded goals from Dwight Gayle, Joe Ledley and Mile Jedinak to make it a hat-trick of domestic defeats. Rodgers also attracted criticism for fielding a weakened team when suffering a 1-0 reversal at Real Madrid in the Champions League during their current slump and the pressure is definitely mounting on the Northern Irishman. With a crucial European trip to Ludogorets coming up on Wednesday, Rodgers knows his players must turn things around quickly or face an early exit from that competition - plus an uphill battle to get back in it next term. "It was a terrific start for us to get up so early, so we've got no-one to blame but ourselves," admitted Rodgers on Sky Sports. "Obviously, we're low on confidence at the moment after recent results and I think the tempo and intensity of our game has dropped right off. "We conceded some poor goals again but, obviously, as the manager, I take full responsibility for that. We aim to be tighter and resolute defensively and in a number of games this season, we've gone in front and that should be enough, but we didn't manage the tempo of the game. "We've got to become a team. We can only get out of this together and by working harder. This is the worst run we've had in my time at the club, but the only way you get over that is by staying together. I don't think it's a crisis but it's certainly not up to our expectancy levels." Many pundits have shown sympathy for Rodgers due to losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona after the Uruguay star was the catalyst behind last season's second-place finish in the Premier League. However, the manager was given the money brought in from that deal and more to help rebuild his squad, with expensive recruits such as Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno and Mario Balotelli yet to justify their price tags. It may be too early to talk of Rodgers being replaced, but former Anfield boss Rafael Benitez is the favourite to succeed him and return to Merseyside if the Liverpool board do press the panic button.

Champions League fixtures Matchday 5 - Dates, kick-off times and permutations

Matchday 5 of the 2014/15 Champions League group stage has thrown up several crucial fixtures and some fascinating permutations with regards which teams will qualify for the knockout rounds. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Porto have already qualified from their pools, but the race is on to join them in the last 16. On Tuesday, Manchester City must beat Bayern Munich to stay alive in Group E, with Roma set to secure second place if they win at CSKA Moscow and the Blues fail to prevail at Etihad Stadium. Only two teams have taken two points or fewer from their opening four group games and still managed to progress from this stage; Lokomotiv Moscow in 2002/03 and Porto in 2004/05. City risk elimination at the group stage for the third time in four attempts. They reached the last 16 last term but finished third in their group in 2011/12 and fourth in 2012/13, when they failed to win a game. Meanwhile, Chelsea will guarantee they advance from Group G if claiming maximum points away to Schalke, or if they secure a draw and score two or more goals against the German outfit. On Wednesday, all eyes will be on whether Liverpool can boost their hopes of finishing second to Real in Group B by beating Ludogorets on the road, with the Reds going into this game on the back of three straight Premier League defeats. Arsenal will also be looking to bounce back from a domestic loss at the hands of Manchester United but can progress if picking up a point or better at home to Borussia Dortmund. Tony Bellew vs Nathan Cleverly 2 tips - Everton FC boss backing local hero to win rematch

Tony Bellew will be hoping for a double celebration on Saturday as he takes on old rival Nathan Cleverly in a grudge rematch at the Echo Arena after his beloved Everton do battle with West Ham in the Premier League at Goodison Park. Bellew suffered a narrow points defeat against the Welshman three years ago but may pundits are predicting he will be better suited by the move up from light-heavyweight to cruiserweight for the second encounter on Merseyside. The Bomber will enter the ring to the Z Cars theme tune associated with Goodison and will be roared on by thousands of Everton fans, while he has been backed to gain revenge for that previous loss by Toffees manager Roberto Martinez, who has regularly seen the fighter working out at their Finch Farm training ground. “The whole football club is behind Tony Bellew,” Martinez told the Liverpool Echo. “It’s great to see an elite boxer working the way he does. He’s a great Evertonian. We enjoy having Tony training here and seeing him about.” Bellew will be seeking to secure another world title shot if emerging successful from this weekend's bout, but putting the record straight by beating Cleverly is the only thing on his mind at the moment. "I only need one punch to land - just one," declared Bellew. “I am also technically better than him as he is actually pretty poor in that department and I can’t see how he can outbox me. "The only thing he has got going for him is that he could outwork me, but I’m not going to die going down the stretch and if that’s what he is hoping for, he is very, very wrong on this occasion.” Bellew's bout can be watched live on Sky Box Office, while Everton are unbeaten in their last six matches and will be seeking to add to their three wins in that sequence when entertaining the Hammers in a 3pm kick-off.

Cardiff City vs Reading Championship live stream, tips, kick-off time and team news

Cardiff City and Reading will both be looking to move back up towards the Championship play-off places when they meet in Wales tonight, with this crucial match having a kick-off time of 19.45 GMT. The Bluebirds and the Royals have both been dropping points of late but aren't too far off the top six and supporters based outside the UK can follow this fixture via live online streaming. Watch Cardiff v Reading here: Cardiff have picked up just two points from their last five road games after losing at Bolton and then drawing at Birmingham before the international break, but Russell Slade's side have been in great form at home of late. Four straight victories at this venue over Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Leeds have kept them in contention to claim a play-off place and the passionate Welsh fans will be roaring on their team again here. Anthony Pilkington, Kenwyne Jones and Bruno Ecuele Manga all face late fitness tests after carrying knocks into the international break and then travelling to represent their respective countries. Reading midfielder Hope Akpan is out for three months after suffering a dislocated shoulder playing for Nigeria, while Anton Ferdinand (calf), Jem Karacan and Danny Williams (both knee injuries) are other absentees, but Garath McCleary and Shaun Cummings could return from lay-offs. The Royals have tasted defeat in seven of their last 11 games after losing 1-0 at home to Charlton just under a fortnight ago, picking up a return of just one point from their past five fixtures on the road. Given that Cardiff have been so strong in the Welsh capital this term, the Bluebirds have to be the percentage pick to prevail, with Jones fancied to add to his six strikes if fit. Prediction: Cardiff 2 Reading 1

Metz vs Paris FC Ligue 1 live stream, tips, kick-off time and team news

Paris Saint-Germain will look to give manager Laurent Blanc a belated birthday present by going top of Ligue 1 with a positive result at Metz tonight, with this game having a kick-off time of 19.30 GMT. Blanc celebrated turning 49 on Wednesday and will be hoping for another party at Stade Saint-Symphorien, with all the action available to watch via live online streaming. Watch Metz v PSG here: The champions have lost just one of their last 18 away games in this division and will edge above Marseille at the summit if maintaining their unbeaten start to the current campaign this evening. Lucas Moura and Edinson Cavani were on target as PSG beat the leaders 2-0 before the international break and it is hard to see newly-promoted Metz being strong enough to stand in their way here. Zlatan Ibrahimovic came off the bench versus Marseille to reappear after seven weeks out with a heel injury and Blanc said: "We've got six more league games to play before the winter break and our ambition is to collect as many points as possible." Ibrahimovic has since suffered some discomfort playing for Sweden, though, and will have to be assessed again, while Blaise Matuidi (broken hand), Marco Verratti (groin) and Lucas (ankle) are other injury concerns. Last season's Ligue 2 title winners Metz must try to stop the visitors' six-game winning streak in all competitions, but on the plus side, they are unbeaten at home themselves this term, with four victories and two draws. Top scorer Juan Falcon could return from a calf problem and head coach Albert Cartier has issued a rallying cry to the local supporters. "Without our fans it will be difficult to achieve a result against PSG," he said. "We have need of them and they have a role to play. The crowd help you chase the ball down when there is nothing left in the tank." Defender Jeremy Choplin added: "The Metz public have for a long time been starved of a fixture of this magnitude and I think they're impatient to see their players rub up against the PSG stars. "Paris have become a top European club but we'll have our say and there's no way we'll be timid against them. Our main motivation is to preserve our unbeaten home record, whether the opposition is called PSG or not." Metz may be talking the talk, but can they walk the walk? We seriously doubt whether they have the class to cope with a PSG side so high on confidence and self-belief and Cavani can fire the visitors to victory. Prediction: Metz 1 PSG 2

Brentford vs Fulham Championship live stream, tips, kick-off time and team news

Two in-form teams will do battle when Brentford host Fulham in the English Championship tonight, with this Griffin Park showdown having a kick-off time of 19.45 GMT. The Bees are chasing a fourth straight success and the Cottagers have lost just one of their last nine league games, with all the action being available to watch via live online streaming outside the UK: Watch Brentford v Fulham here: For Brentford, victory over leaders Derby followed by triumphs at Nottingham Forest and Millwall have seen Mark Warburton's men leap into the play-off spots and they currently sit in sixth place. Striker Andre Gray has scored four times in those three consecutive wins and at home they have been strong this season with four triumphs, three draws and just the one defeat. Star midfielder Jonathan Douglas will be back after missing his first match of the campaign through suspension before the international break, but Alan McCormack (ankle) and Scott Hogan (cruciate) remain long-term absentees. For Fulham, goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly is on stand-by as Marcus Bettinelli faces a late fitness test on a thumb injury, while defenders Fernando Amorebieta (knee) and Tim Hoogland (pelvis) are doubtful and striker Adam Taggart is still sidelined. The Cottagers are now unbeaten in six games, though Kit Symons does need to solve the problem of their away form, which has been an Achilles heel for too long now, with just one road victory this term. However, with a strike trio of Brian Ruiz, Hugo Rodallega and Ross McCormack it's no surprise they have banged in 16 goals in those last six games and this should be another entertaining encounter. Griffin Park is tight old-fashioned ground and having sold-out for Fulham's first visit in 15 years it should be rocking under lights for this much-anticipated clash, with slight preference for Brentford to make home advantage count. Prediction: Brentford 2 Fulham 1

I'm A Celebrity 2014 - Jimmy Bullard hot favourite after Craig Charles leaves jungle

Former Premier League footballer Jimmy Bullard is now a firm favourite to be crowned King of the Jungle after Craig Charles, one of his main market rivals, was forced to leave the 2014 I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here show due to a family bereavement. The Coronation Street star flew home following the sad death of his brother, leaving ex-midfielder Bullard clear at the head of the betting, with television presenter Melanie Sykes now rated his only real threat. Bullard has been keeping viewers and his fellow contestants amused since the start of the series with his zany antics, witty comments and foul-mouthed humour. Former Boddingtons girl Sykes hailed Bullard as being "full of energy and crazy in the mornings" as he woke the rest of the camp by singing a song from the Jungle Book! The 36-year-old Londoner, who represented West Ham, Peterborough United, Wigan Athletic, Fulham, Hull City, Ipswich Town and Milton Keynes Dons in his playing days has also excelled in bushtucker trials. Bullard starred alongside former Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson in The Terror Tavern, where both had to eat disgusting dishes to earn meals for the hungry celebrities. Former Allo Allo star Vikki Michelle is being tipped to be the first elimination, with Kendra also rated a leading contender in this market, despite winning over many admirers with her willing attitude, and new entry Edwina Currie considered too. Unfortunately, Charles had to join The Only Way Is Essex regular Gemma Collins in leaving the Australia-based show early after his tragic news.

Liverpool FC transfer news - Jackson Martinez and Andre Schurrle to join in January

Following a fresh injury blow to Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool have been backed to make a move for Porto front man Jackson Martinez and Chelsea ace Andre Schurrle in the January transfer window. Sturridge has been out of action since the end of August due to a thigh problem and then a calf strain but was thought to be close to a return this weekend when the Reds visit Crystal Palace. However, a separate thigh injury has emerged in training and initial reports suggest the 25-year-old England striker could be sidelined until the New Year following this latest setback. With summer signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert yet to fire for Liverpool, speculation is mounting over whether Brendan Rodgers will look to bring in another option at the earliest possible opportunity. Any thoughts of bidding to land Wilfried Bony have been blown away by the Ivory Coast hitman signing a new one-year deal with Swansea City, so the Anfield scouts will have to consider new alternatives. Martinez would be the No 1 target after establishing himself as a hot property with Porto over the last few seasons, scoring 46 goals in the last two Primeira Liga campaigns and continuing his good form with seven domestic strikes and four Champions League scores this term. The 35-times capped Colombia forward also caught the eye when bagging a brace in his country's win over Japan at the Brazil 2014 World Cup and the 28-year-old could slot straight into the Liverpool first team if he can be persuaded to switch to Merseyside. A slightly less obvious option is Germany international Schurrle, who has been used more as an attacking midfielder by Chelsea but has played further forward for Mainz and Bayer Leverkusen earlier in his career, as well as for Die Mannschaft. Having apparently slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, Schurrle could be offloaded in the same way as Juan Mata was last January and Rodgers would be sure to appreciate his excellent fitness levels, work-rate and pace.

Next Motherwell FC manager market - Black backed to challenge Adams for Fir Park job

Kenny Black has come in for sustained support to eventually be named as the next Motherwell manager following the news that he is set to get an extended stay as caretaker boss at Fir Park. Derek Adams remains the favourite to replace Stuart McCall on a permanent basis, but he could soon be challenged at the head of the market by Black if results continue to improve for the Steelmen. McCall called time on his popular reign at the club following a run of five straight Scottish Premiership defeats in September and October, having been in charge since 2010. Black then made an immediate impression as Motherwell rallied to beat Dundee United 1-0 at home in their next league game, with Iain Vigurs scoring the only goal of that fixture. McCall's former No 2, who has also worked as an assistant with the Scotland national team in the past, will get another chance to shine when Well visit Inverness on Saturday, while that trip is followed by home games versus Dundee United in the cup and Celtic and Ross County in the league. Motherwell confirmed they have received 55 applications for the vacant position, but discussions over new investment in the club could delay any selection process. "We have been extremely encouraged by the quality and calibre of applicants from across the world, which includes twenty different nationalities," said a statement on the club website. "The Board has started the process of agreeing a shortlist of candidates we would like to formally interview. "In May, the club released a statement advising we were in the process of is seeking new investment. Discussions are ongoing with interested parties and we are planning to reach a conclusion by the end of the current month. "As a result, the Board has agreed to delay the appointment of a new manager until the issue of ongoing ownership of the club is resolved. We have spoken at length with Kenny Black and he enthusiastically agreed to continue in the role as caretaker manager until a full time appointment is made. "We are extremely grateful to Kenny and the rest of the management team for their cooperation during this period as we look forward to the next chapter in the club’s history."
