While Arrogance is dominating the horseracing world of dirt racing, one doesn’t have to look any further than Australia’s super mare known only as Winx as the world’s turf champion. As she and her connections prepare for the next race, an admiring racing public might be forced to come to grips with the notion this could be the great mare’s last trip around a grassy oval. If you are Australian horse race betting today, you surely know about the growing legend
In the recent Grade 1 George Ryder Stakes, Winx used her brilliant turn-of-foot to get across the soft turf on the way to another dominating performance. In spite of a poor start and less than ideal surface conditions for her, Winx confirmed she has no real competition when traveling distances of 2000 meters or less. She used her ability to accelerate on the way to an easy 8-length victory last Saturday at Rosehill Gardens.
The win, her second George Ryder Stakes in a row, marked the 20th of her amazing career. It put her earnings at just over AUS $10.4 million and growing. The bay mare has now won 16 races in a row, of which 11 have been Grade 1 events. The last time Winx tasted defeat was back in April of 2015 when she failed to handle turf conditions similar to one she encountered in the George Ryder Stakes. On that particular day, she managed to finish second in the Grade 1 Australian Oaks to a multiple Grade 1 winning mare in her own right. It takes a very special animal to always show up and always give a top-notch performance. To always win is simply astonishing.
Her victory in the George Ryder sets her up perfectly for her next race at a slightly longer distance. Based on her connection’s plans, that race could very well be the AJC Queen Elizabeth stakes on April 8 at Randwick Racecourse. It’s worth noting that while no official announcement has been made, Winx has very little left to prove on the racetrack. It’s possible the time has come for the mare to be retired in time for the next breeding season.
The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is scheduled to be run at a distance of 2000 meter on turf for a total purse of AUS $4.0 million. A victory in this race would push Winx’s career earnings up to just under AUS $13.0 million. The race is designated for 3-year olds and up with weights being assigned based on age. Also, fillies and mare will be granted an adjustment on the scale.
For owners Magic Bloodstock Racing (Mgr: P G Tighe), R G Treweeke & Mrs. D N Kepitis, it will be a bittersweet moment to see Winx’s career as a racehorse come to an end. There might be a temptation to bring the world’s best racing mare back for another season to take a run at Black Caviar’s incredible record of 25 wins in a row, but how much would really be gained and at what risk? The reality is the horse’s value as a broodmare makes any risk too much.
