Australia’s preparations for the World Cup off to a bad start

Australia is set to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best when it comes to football. As such the onus is on Australia to ensure that they prepare well for the tournament in order to give themselves a chance of avoiding embarrassing defeats and even causing some upsets. The team’s preparations for the football extravaganza started this past week when the team took on Norway in a match Australia was widely expected to win including various casinos online that tipped the Socceroos’ to win. Things, however, did not go to plan as the preparations started with a defeat.

Australia vs Norway review

The new manager for the Australian national team, Bert Van Marwijk who led the Netherlands to a runners-up finish at the 2010 World Cup selected the familiar faces in his first squad. The usual suspects such as Tim Cahill, Aaron Mooy, and Matthew Ryan were included while he gave debuts to Trent Sainsbury and Matthew Jurman.

The first twenty minutes was the perfect start for Bert Van Marwijk as Australia controlled the midfield and were rewarded with a goal in the 19th minute that was scored by Jackson Irvine. The joy did not last for a long time however as Norway found a way back to score four times without a reply and win the match by four goals to one. Ola Kamara from LA Galaxy in the MLS bagged a hat-trick while Tore Reginiussen also put his name on the score sheet.

Speaking after the match, Bert Van Marwijk said that the team is not ready for the World Cup. He acknowledged that he knew that Australia was not ready even before he accepted the job but said there is ample time for the team to rectify the mistakes they made in the game. He was particularly disappointed with the defence which he said committed a lot of mistakes. He also expressed reservations about the way the midfield failed to control the game. Playing with an extra man in midfield, Bert Van Marwijk said he expected his midfield players to do better and control the game.

However, Bert Van Marwijk was optimistic as he said that if you need to know your players, the best time to do that is in defeat. He said that the game gave him a chance to know his players a bit more.

Upcoming matches

Australia still has three more matches to play before their World Cup adventure starts and Bert Van Marwijk knows that he has a lot of work on his hands if he is to guide Australia to a respectable finish in the World Cup. Australia’s next match is against Colombia, a team that is riding high from a comeback 3-2 win over France. Columbia’s stars have also been in form ahead of the World Cup and this is going to be a stern test for Australia when they come up against world class players such as James Rodriguez and Radamao Falcao.
